Why You Need to Delegate, Especially at Christmas!

Christmas shopping 2Christmas time is a great time for many businesses, especially those in retail and with online shops. The shops and Internet are bustling with people purchasing Christmas presents, and stock is flying off the shelves, which means the cash tills are making a lot of sales.

As someone who is in charge of their own business it can be really hard to let go and put other people in charge, especially at busy times of the year when you need everything to run smoothly. When you know that the success of your business means everything to you, giving tasks to someone else to do can be hard – because you want to make sure that the job is done correctly.

However, if you are trying to do everything this Christmas rather than delegating tasks to other capable people you could easily be holding yourself  and your business back for no reason. There is no reason at all why you shouldn’t trust people to oversee tasks and take charge of elements of your business.

Why Delegate?

One of the biggest reasons to delegate is to give yourself more time to concentrate on bigger tasks. We have to face facts that there are only so many hours in the day and this means that we don’t always have time to do everything that we need.

Rather than let some tasks fall by the wayside because you are too busy to do everything, give some of the more general day to day or admin tasks to someone else to do. By delegating some of the more general day to day tasks of the business you will have time to focus on other tasks that need doing and that only you can do. You will also free up some more of your own time so you can focus on running the business, which will allow you more time to develop and expand it.

If you plan ahead of your busy times each year and delegate accordingly, you will not feel under strain, and at Christmas you will have time to step back and enjoy the festivities as well.

Who To Delegate To?

When it comes to delegating, there are different ways that you can approach this. Firstly, you can look at who is trained in your company (or could be trained) to carry out any business tasks that need to be done. You can often get peace of mind that it is OK to delegate in this way by knowing that you can oversee anything that needs to be done. Also, by training someone who is already in your business, they will already know about the company, you would have already built up a rapport with them and they will already know how the business works.

It is also possible (and often a good idea) to look at getting third party help and outsourcing some of your tasks. For example, if your retail business also sells products online then you could look at getting on board with an order fulfilment company. Different companies will offer different services, but you can often get help and support with tasks such as processing your online orders that could include: order fulfilment, posting out items, storage of stock, inventory control, post box rental, mail fulfilment and distribution. By choosing a company with plenty of experience you can feel confident that your tasks are in good hands. This gives you time to get on with the rest of your business tasks and working hard to ensure that your business is as successful as possible.

If you find delegating hard and you are feeling the strain this Christmas trying to do everything, but without the time to do it, then make the necessary changes this Christmas and start the New Year as you mean to go on.
